Gynecology and obstetrics care throughout Atlanta, GA women’s lives

Women need different doctors for different life stages

Gynecology and obstetrics are two specialties in Atlanta, GA women’s healthcare. Women need to have a few different types of doctors on their healthcare team. Each physician will provide care for specific areas of women’s health and at different times in their lives.

Childhood physicians

Growing up, children may see a pediatric physician or a family doctor. These doctors can provide care when illness or injury occurs. They also perform yearly physical exams if required by schools. They are usually chosen by your parents. If you have a chronic illness or an illness they can’t diagnose, this doctor will refer you to a specialist in that area.

Teenage years

When women enter their teens, they take their first step into the world of gynecology and obstetrics. Many girls start going to a gynecologist for annual exams and birth control questions. Girls should start seeing a gynecologist or OBGYN when they become sexually active.

Young adult years

As young adults, women will continue to use the services of doctors who specialize in gynecology and obstetrics. Annual visits to a gynecologist will continue and additional visits may happen if you have concerns.

If women decide to have a child, or find themselves expecting, they will need the services of an obstetrician. This physician provides care to women who are expecting and who have recently given birth.

So, what is the difference between gynecology and obstetrics? Why can’t your gynecologist care for you during pregnancy? A gynecologist is trained to keep women’s reproductive system healthy. They are not licensed or trained to deliver babies or provide prenatal care. An obstetrician, on the other hand, specializes in prenatal care and delivery, but not general women’s healthcare.

Older years

As women age and begin to go through menopause, they may think their visits their gynecology and obstetrics physicians can end. However, women should continue to see their gynecologist or OBGYN throughout their lives. These doctors will continue to check for cancer such as breast cancer. They can also guide women through menopause and may even suggest treatments such as hormone therapy to help control symptoms.
