Gynecology and Obstetrics: What’s the difference?

Gynecology and Obstetrics: What’s the difference?

Gynecologists and obstetricians play an important role in women’s health

Gynecology and obstetrics are two important subsets of medicine that focus on keeping Atlanta, GA women healthy. Though these two specialties are often used interchangeably. You would see these two types of physicians for very different reasons and care. Both, however, strive to keep you healthy and provide quality to care to women in the Atlanta and Alpharetta areas.

Gynecologists focus on the health of your reproductive organs

Gynecology and obstetrics focus on two areas. First, we’ll discuss gynecology. Your gynecologist focuses on keeping women’s reproductive organs healthy. You would make an appointment with them for many reasons. They perform annual wellness exams, including Pap Smears, breast exams, and pelvic exams.

Your gynecologist can also provide other services. They can offer birth control management, family planning services, even STD and STI testing. If you experience pain stemming from a reproductive organ, your gynecologist can help with that too.

Obstetricians keep you and your baby healthy

There is one big factor that separates gynecology and obstetrics. And that factor is pregnancy. An obstetrician provides care for women who are pregnant or who have recently given birth. These doctors work to make sure you and your baby stay healthy throughout your pregnancy. You visit your obstetrician regularly for checkups throughout your pregnancy. Your physician will also perform needed tests on you and your baby, as needed.

When it’s time to deliver, your obstetrician will be there. They are trained to perform vaginal deliveries as well as C-sections. They will also continue to provide you care for a while after you have the baby, before releasing you back to your gynecologist.

Some doctors are trained in both areas

Though gynecology and obstetrics are two different medical areas, there are some doctors who specialize in both. Doctors with training in both gynecology and obstetrics are called OBGYNs. These physicians are able to care for their patients throughout every stage of life, including pregnancy. This helps provide a level of comfort to patients, not to mention allows the OBGYN and their patient to form a lasting relationship.
