Q. What is a women’s specialist?

A. A women’s specialist is a physician who specializes in the treatment of women’s issues, specifically focusing on the reproductive system. These doctors include obstetricians, gynecologists, and OBGYNs.

Q. What do obstetricians, gynecologists, and OBGYNs do?

A. These three types of doctors make up women’s specialist. But, two of them focus on very different areas of women’s health. A gynecologist is a doctor who specializes in the health of women’s reproductive organs. You would see them for annual visits or issues with your menstrual cycle, sexual health, and other health concerns specific to women.

An obstetrician, on the other hand, provides care to women who are expecting. They do not provide care to women who aren’t. In addition to keeping women and their babies healthy, an obstetrician would also deliver the baby.

The last physician that makes up the women’s specialist group is an OBGYN. This women’s specialist is trained both in obstetrics and gynecology, meaning they can provide care to women at all stages of life.

Q. How often should I see a women’s specialist?

A. You should see your women’s specialist, such as an OBGYN or gynecologist, at least once a year for a wellness exam. But, if you experience pain, are exposed to STDs or STIs, or notice a lump in your breast, you should also contact your doctor for an appointment immediately.

Q. What is a wellness exam like?

A. When you visit your women’s specialist for a wellness exam, it will begin much like any other doctor’s exam. Your physician will start by checking your weight, height, blood pressure, and other vitals. They will then perform a breast exam to check for signs of breast cancer, followed by a pelvic exam. Depending on your needs and age, they will also do a Pap Smear to check for cervical cancer. This is also an ideal time to bring up any issues or concerns you have.
