Pregnancy is an exciting time, but not all women have a smooth experience

Obstetrician provides care to Atlanta and Alpharetta, GA women who are expecting or have recently had a baby. Though these specialists provide care to all women who are pregnancy, the obstetricians at Georgia Obstetrics and Gynecology also provide care to women who are having high risk pregnancies.

Though many women get pregnant and have babies every day, not everyone has a smooth pregnancy. Some may experience what is called a high risk pregnancy, meaning they need extra care to make sure they, and their child, are healthy.

There are many reasons you may have a high risk pregnancy

There are many reasons your obstetrician may treat you as having a high risk pregnancy. Some are due to natural factors, other may hinge on preexisting conditions the mother has before pregnancy.

The mother’s age is a common reason your obstetrician may provide extra care during your pregnancy. Women who are over the age of 35 tend to have a higher risk of complications. Those over 40 are at an even more increased risk of pregnancy complications. If you are planning to get pregnant and are over 35, you may want to consult an obstetrician first.

But, age isn’t the only reason thing that can trigger a high risk pregnancy. The mother’s preexisting health needs can also make pregnancy a little higher risk. Women with diabetes, sexually transmitted diseases, kidney issues, and more, are also risk factors for having a high risk pregnancy.

Some complications may develop during the pregnancy

Some women may start their pregnancy seeing their obstetrician regularly, but then develop complications which makes the remainder of their pregnancy high risk. Gestational diabetes and preeclampsia, also known as high blood pressure, can both develop as your pregnancy progresses, putting you at increased risk of complications. Women who are having multiple babies, such as twins, will also need to visit their obstetrician a little more frequently.

There are steps you can take to help keep you healthy during pregnancy

If you are a high risk pregnancy, your obstetrician will provide you information on how to manage it, whether it mean more frequent doctor appointments, more tests, or even bed rest. But, if you are pregnancy and not yet high risk, there are things you can do to keep you and the baby healthy such as regular exercise, eating a balanced diet, and getting the required immunizations.
