Women’s obstetrics and gynecology provide care for Alpharetta, GA women in various stages of life. Though the two specialties are often used to refer to women’s care in general, they actually focus on two different areas. One area where these two specialties work together though, is in family planning.

Knowing the difference between women’s obstetrics and gynecology is important when it comes to understating their different roles in family planning. Gynecology, to start, refers to caring for women’s reproductive organs. This involves annual exams, STD and STI testing, mammograms, and more. Obstetrics, on the other hand, refers to the care of women who are expecting or who have recently given birth. Obstetricians are not able to provide care outside of these events.
Family planning and birth control
Birth control plays a big role in family planning by preventing unwanted or unplanned pregnancies. Though this isn’t the only reason women may choose to go on birth control, it is a big one. Women will work with their gynecologist to find the best method for them, whether it be in pill form, a shot, or IUD insertion.
When women decide they are ready to start a family, they will work with their gynecologist to go off birth control. Your gynecologist may also be able provide you tips to help you conceive and perform testing to confirm your pregnancy.
When a baby is on the way, your obstetrician will step in
Women’s obstetrics and gynecology will work to pass your care off to the correct doctor when it’s time for baby. You’ll transition to seeing an obstetrician who will provide care in the form of regular doctor visits and checkups. They will then deliver the baby and provide more care for you right after you give birth as well. Once you are cleared from their care. You’ll be able to return to your gynecologist for care, including additional birth control counseling.
